Nicolas Party
4 November 2023—3 March 2024
Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, Germany
Swiss artist Nicolas Party moves resolutely between the two extremes offered by the spectrum of painting. While he is deeply connected to the classical genres of still life, landscape, and portrait in his paintings and pastels, he also engages in monumental and immersive site-specific murals that are painted directly on the wall and are visible only for the duration of the exhibition. The subjects of his imagery do not hide behind their art-historical influences, ranging from medieval art to Italian pastel painting to developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
For his exhibition at the Museum Frieder Burda, the artist will cover the walls of the entire museum with colorful and illusionistic paintings. Richard Meier’s architecture, which is characterized by its white surfaces and clear geometrical forms, will be transformed into a colorfully atmospheric spatial experience. A selection of Party’s recent paintings on copper, which are reminiscent of travel altarpieces, will accompany the show. Nicolas Party was born in 1980 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is based in New York. His work is part of numerous distinguished collections, and the artist has had significant solo exhibitions in museums in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
