Splendid Isolation looks at how artists create (or created) work during periods of isolation. Self-imposed isolation can be an advantage or even a necessary condition for the practice of certain artists, but for many it is a condition determined by geographical, political or biological factors. Whatever the cause of their seclusion, numerous artists use the situation to make work, whether out of necessity, as an exit strategy, an indictment, or as a testimony.
