On the occasion of his first institutional solo show in Italy, Nicolas Party (Lausanne, 1980) conceived a body of new works in close dialogue with masterpieces from the Poldi Pezzoli collection. The artist responds to the historical artworks preserved in the house museum of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli by communicating through his own contemporary language, which is recognized for featuring motifs of portraiture, still life and landscape. Adopting a very bright colour palette and essential iconographic compositions, Party works on various dimensions, from traditional paintings to large murals and spatial interventions that interact and transform the architectonic spaces.

Party’s new works, especially created for the spaces of the museum, challenge hierarchies and suggest a universal art which defies the aura of time. His innovative interpretation of the triptych – inspired by Mariotto Albertinelli’s eponymous artwork in the Museum’s collection – opens new perspectives for his own practice, while shedding a fresh light on the extraordinary masterpieces of Italian painting to which the Poldi Pezzoli Museum has been a home since the 19th century.
