Walter Swennen in Revolt?!
15 March —28 June 2026
Group exhibition at Emile Verhaeren Museum, Puurs-Sint-Amands, Belgium
Revolts have long been a social phenomenon linked to the emergence of the labor movement. It is no coincidence that Émile Verhaeren wrote two poems about it. But from the 1960s onward, revolt took on primarily an artistic dimension: Around the theme of social and artistic revolt, this exhibitions brings several artists into dialogue.

In addition to works by Eugène Laermans, James Ensor, Maximilien Luce, Paul Signac, Frank Brangwyn, and others, we present contemporary works by Nel Aerts, Marcel Broodthaers, Jacques Charlier, Nikolaas Demoen, Palatine Demoen, Koba De Meutter, Francis Denys, Danny Devos, Dieter Durinck, Peter Morrens, Walter Swennen, Dennis Tyfus, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, and Benjamin Verdonck. In a separate section, we present documents relating to initiatives by Belgian artists at the intersection of artistic experimentation and social engagement. An artistic barricade from Verhaeren to the present day.
