Created for FIFA World Cup 2026™, The Art of the Game transforms the world’s most recognized symbol of sport into a series of monumental public sculptures by 23 internationally recognized artists. The reimagined six-foot soccer ball sculptures are installed across New York City and New Jersey, inviting residents and visitors to experience contemporary art in public spaces throughout the summer of 2026.

The Art of the Game was the last philanthropic endeavor conceived by renowned art patron and collector Agnes Gund, who passed away last year. Gund was a close friend of Diana Burroughs, executive director of ARTS 14C’s artist residency program, Project 14C. Gund played a huge role in engaging museum leaders and major gallerists for the project, and Burroughs said that it would not have been possible without her.

The 23 artists commissioned for the project were selected by leaders of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, El Museo del Barrio, the Brooklyn Museum, the Centre Pompidou, and the Van Abbemuseum. The initiative also received additional support from Christie’s, its official auction partner. These include: Mario Ayala, Katherine Bernhardt, Leo Castañeda, Matthew Day Jackson, Gabriel Fontana x Jeannette Slütter x All Sizes, Edgar Heap of Birds, Wyatt Kahn, Gabriel Lester, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Ronny Quevedo, Cemile Sahin, Hank Willis Thomas, Fred Wilson (New York City). And Bassim Al Shaker, Kevin Beasley, Taína H. Cruz, Futura 2000, Dan Funderburgh, Madeline Hollander, Eddie Martinez, Melissa McGill, Bony Ramirez, Nyugen E. Smith (New Jersey).
