Alice Neel
Still Lifes and Street Scenes

Text by Frances Borzello, published by Xavier Hufkens, Brussels, 2026, 128 pages, hardcover, English

Xavier Hufkens is pleased to present a new catalogue on Alice Neel, published on the occasion of the exhibition Still Lifes and Street Scenes (2025).

"Given her early disdain for rules, I am not convinced that the word landscape is the best way of describing Alice Neel’s depiction of the world beyond the sitter’s chair. I prefer her own term, ‘outdoor painting’. When you gather the paintings together, there is not much that fits into the traditional landscape category. The closest are the green Vermont paintings but these are the exceptions among the buildings, city streets under snow and fire escapes she loved so much".
